INDIANAPOLIS, June 28, 2013 – The Fierce Five℠, the 2012 Olympic team gold medalists, as well as Gabrielle Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Chow's Gymnastics and Dance, the Olympic all-around gold medalist, and Aly Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan's American Gymnastics, the Olympic floor exercise champion, are nominees for this year's ESPY awards.Fans may click here to vote.The Fierce Five (Douglas, McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympia, Raisman, Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max, and Jordyn Wieber of DeWitt, Mich./Gedderts' Twistars USA) won the USA's second-ever team gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games. It was the first team victory for the USA since Atlanta's Magnificent Seven in 1996 and the first outside the United States. The group is up for the Best Team Award, along with the University of Alabama football team, Baltimore Ravens, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Miami Heat, the University of Oklahoma softball team, and the San Francisco Giants.
Douglas, who is nominated for two individual awards (Best Female U.S. Olympic Athlete and Best Female Athlete), became the fourth-ever and third-consecutive American woman to win the Olympic all-around gold medal. Douglas also won the all-around at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials – Gymnastics, earning her an automatic berth to the U.S. Olympic Team. In the Best Female Athlete category, Douglas is joined by swimming's Missy Franklin, Baylor basketball's Brittney Griner and tennis' Serena Williams.
Raisman, captain of The Fierce Five, became the first U.S. woman to win the floor exercise gold at an Olympics and joins Douglas and Shannon Miller as the only U.S. female gymnasts to win two gold medals in the same Olympics. Raisman also claimed the bronze medal on the balance beam and tied for third in the all-around, finishing fourth after a tiebreak. She, along with Douglas and Franklin, are nominated for the Best Female U.S. Olympic Athlete award.
