Jake Dalton and Katelyn Ohashi - 2013 American Cup Winners!



WORCESTER, MASS., March 2, 2013 – 2012 Olympian and 2013 Winter Cup Champion Jake Dalton of Reno, Nev./University, Oklahoma, and Katelyn Ohashi of Plano, Texas/WOGA, won the all-around titles at the 2013 AT&T American Cup inside the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. Dalton posted a 89.398, while Ohashi scored a 59.199. Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/Bannon's Gymnastix, finished second with a score of 57.666. For the men, Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine, who finished 11th in the all-around at the 2012 Olympic Games, finished second in the all-around with a score of 87.298.
"It feels great to win the AT&T American Cup – it's good to get back into routine mode and hit all my routines," said Dalton. "Start value and consistency are my focus – I want to be the one to count on when I go out there and compete."
Dalton started off strong on floor with his Arabian double layout mount and triple full dismount to score the top floor score of a 15.700. He moved to pommel horse and scored a 13.333. On rings, Dalton has made some great improvements showing a Maltese press to planche to Azarian iron cross and a double twisting double tuck dismount to score a 15.166. Dalton had the highest vault score of the day with a 15.433 on his Kasamatsu double full. He scored a 15.033 on parallel bars and finished off the competition on high bar, complete with his double twisting double layout dismount to score a 14.733, another high score of the day.
Ohashi, in her international debut as a senior, had the highest score of the day on balance beam with her incredible series of flip flop, flip flop, layout full twist and double pike dismount to score a 15.333.
"It feels so great to be out here – it's a great way to start my senior career," Ohashi said after the competition. "I want to keep upgrading my routines and focus on cleaning them up and being consistent."
Ohashi scored a 14.900 on her Yurchenko double full and a 14.566 on uneven bars for her Ono spin, Jaeger and full twisting double back dismount. On floor, Ohashi showed a new floor routine with a piked full-twisting double back mount and a two-and-a-half twist to punch front dismount to score a 14.400.
Biles had the highest score of the day on vault for her Yurchenko two-and-a-half, called an Amanar, which scored a 15.733. She also had the highest score of the day on uneven bars with a 14.800. Biles, who was leading after the first and second events, had a fall on her balance beam series of flip flop, flip flop, layout, to finish a strong second. She scored a 13.133 on balance beam and a 14.000 on floor exercise, complete with a double-twisting double back and a double layout.
Danell Leyva of Miami/Universal Gymnastics, struggled on his first event floor, scoring a 12.800. He picked up his pace on pommel horse, showing upgrades and scoring a 14.566. Levya scored a 14.433 on still rings and on vault he performed a Kasumatsu one-and-a-half to score a 15.033. On parallel bars, he scored a 14.833 and on the horizontal bar, he struggled and scored a 13.600.
2006 World all-around champion Vanessa Ferrari had the highest score on floor with a 14.466, complete with her double-twisting, double back mount.
On the men's side, Verniaiev had the high score on pommel horse of a 15.033. Germany's Marcel Nguyen, who is the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the all-around, tied Dalton for the top score on rings (15.166). Nguyen also had the top score on parallel bars of 15.133.
2012 Olympic team gold medalist Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max, performed an exhibition routine on balance beam.
For the fourth consecutive year the AT&T American Cup is a part of the FIG's all-around World Cup series and kicks off the road to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The field featured many of the top athletes from last summer's Olympic Games in London.
