USA Gymnastics enjoys great success in 2011

INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 12, 2011 – The USA's top gymnasts enjoyed great international success in 2011, putting the United States in a good position heading into the Olympic year. Here's a brief look at the highlights from 2011.

• The USA qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in men's and women's gymnastics and women's trampoline, based on performances at the 2011 World Championships. The United States will have the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics in rhythmic gymnastics and men's trampoline at the 2012 Olympic Test Event.
• At the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, the United States won a total of seven medals, including four gold, and secured team berths to the 2012 Olympic Games in London for both men's and women's gymnastics. The women's team gold medal is the USA's first since 2007 and third overall. For the men, the team bronze medal is the first team medal since 2003. The individual gold medalists are: Jordyn Wieber of DeWitt, Mich./Geddert's Twistars USA, all-around; McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympia Gymnastics, vault; and Danell Leyva of Miami/Universal Gymnastics, parallel bars.
• At the World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships, the USA won three medals in addition to qualifying for women's trampoline at the Olympic Games. Austin White of Irvine, Calif./World Elite Gymnastics, earned the men's double mini-trampoline silver medal, and the USA won the team bronze medal in both men's and women's double mini-trampoline.
• At the Pan American Games, the USA's gymnasts earned 18 gymnastics medals, including nine gold. The gold medalists were: women's team; women's all-around and uneven bars – Bridgette Caquatto of Naperville, Ill./Legacy Elite; women's vault – Brandy Jay of Ft. Collins, Colo./GK Gymnastics; still rings – Brandon Wynn of Voorhees, N.J./Team Hilton HHonors; horizontal bar – Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y./University of Illinois; and rhythmic gymnastics all-around, ball and ribbon – Julie Zetlin of Bethesda, Md./Capital Rhythmics.
• Kalon Ludvigson of Pocatello, Idaho/Team Revolution, won the USA's first World Cup series title for men's tumbling.

The top accomplishments for women's and men's gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling, acrobatic gymnastics, and group gymnastics are outlined below, by discipline.
Women's Gymnastics The U.S. women won a total of 40 medals in international competition in 2011, as of Dec. 11.

• World Championships. The U.S. women captured the team gold medal, remaining the only country in the world to have won a team medal at every World Championships or Olympic Games where a team competition was contested since 2000. With this performance, the women qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
  
  • The U.S. women earned the team gold medal for the just the third time in history (2003, 2007, 2011), besting second-place Russia by more than five points. The American squad hit 24-for-24 routines and 12-for-12 during the qualification and team finals competition rounds, respectively. The members of the U.S. Team were: Gabrielle Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Chow's Gymnastics and Dance Institute; McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympia Gymnastics; Alexandra Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan's American Gymnastics; Alicia Sacramone of Winchester, Mass./Brestyan's American Gymnastics, Sabrina Vega of Carmel, N.Y./Dynamic Gymnastics; Jordyn Wieber of DeWitt, Mich./Gedderts' Twistars USA; and Anna Li of Aurora, Ill./Legacy Elite Gymnastics LLC, alternate.
  • Wieber became the sixth U.S. woman to claim the all-around gold medal. In addition, she earned the bronze medal on the balance beam.
  • Maroney won the gold medal on vault, the third consecutive American to take top honors on the event.
  • Raisman captured the floor exercise bronze medal and earned a fourth place all-around finish.
  • The team gold medal gave Sacramone her 10th career World medal, the highest number earned by a U.S. female gymnast.
• Pan American Games. Team USA won five medals, including four gold, in Guadalajara, Mexico. The U.S. women's team won the team gold medal, its 12th in Pan American Games history.
  
  • The members of the gold medal team: Bridgette Caquatto of Naperville, Ill./Legacy Elite Gymnastics LLC; Jessie DeZiel of Rogers, Minn./Twin City Twisters; Brandie Jay of Ft. Collins, Colo./GK Gymnastics; Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa/Chow's Gymnastics and Dance Institute; Grace McLaughlin of Allen, Texas/WOGA Gymnastics; and Bridget Sloan of Pittsboro, Ind./Sharp's Gymnastics Academy.
  • Caquatto won the women's all-around gold medal, continuing the USA's streak that dates back to the 1987 Pan American Games. She also won the uneven bars gold medal.
  • Jay earned the women's vault gold medal.
  • Johnson claimed the silver medal on the uneven bars.
• AT&T American Cup. In her international debut as a senior level gymnast, Wieber claimed the AT&T American Cup all-around title in Jacksonville, Fla., while teammate Raisman won the bronze. This was Wieber's second American Cup title.
• City of Jesolo Trophy. The USA won 20 medals for the juniors and seniors combined at the 2011 City of Jesolo (Italy) Trophy. The United States' success included both the junior and senior team gold medals and a sweep of the junior and senior all-around medals. Team USA's senior gold medalists were Maroney (all-around, vault); Caquatto (uneven bars); Raisman (balance beam, floor exercise). For the juniors, Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max Gymnastics (all-around, balance beam); Lexie Priessman of Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Gymnastics (vault); and Katelyn Ohashi of Plano, Texas/WOGA (floor exercise). The other senior women on the team were: Douglas, Amanda Jetter of Milford, Ohio, Cincinnati Gymnastics, Vega and Wieber. The junior team also included Ericha Fassbender of Katy, Texas/Stars Gymnastics; Sarah Finnegan of Lake Latawanna, Mo./GAGE; Madison Kocian of Dallas, Texas/WOGA; and Elizabeth Price of Coopersburg, Pa./Parkettes.
• Junior Japan. Priessman and Amelia Hundley of Hamilton, Ohio, both with Cincinnati Gymnastics, finished first and second in the all-around, respectively, at the 2011 Japan Junior International in Yokohama, Japan. In the event finals, the duo combined for six medals, including Priessman's gold medals on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Hundley earned silver medals on vault and floor and bronze on the uneven bars.

Last week on Teen Mom 2 Jenelle Evans pressed charges against Kieffer Delp after a shocking fight got violent. In a sneak preview from MTV, Jenelle takes Kieffer to turn himself in — but he tries to make her feel guilty about it!

“It was wrong what I did, but I don’t deserve to be in jail,” he whines. Jenelle doesn’t have much sympathy for him, but Kieffer does everything he can to make her feel guilty. “If I get locked up, I don’t want no letters from you.”

McKayla Maroney wins vault gold medal for U.S.

McKayla Maroney, a 15-year-old from Laguna Hills and a first-year competitor for the United States at the senior level of gymnastics, won her second gold medal at the world championships in Tokyo on Friday night.




After helping the United States women win the team gold medal earlier in the week, Maroney won individual gold in the vault event final.



Maroney's two vaults averaged a score of 15.3 and gave her a solid win over silver medalist Oksana Chusovitina, a 36-year-old from Germany, who won the silver medal. Thi Ha Thanh Phan of Vietnam won the bronze.



"I was really calm," Maroney said by telephone from Tokyo after the medal celebration. "I didn't worry, I just felt really good going out there."



Maroney said she didn't cry during the medal ceremony but she said her U.S. teammates gave her a hard time. "They said I wasn't smiling," she said. "I think I was smiling. I felt like I was smiling. I don't know, it is just so great."



Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, said the international judges made a point of praising Maroney's skills and form on her vaults, both in the individual event final and during team preliminaries and finals. "She was really electrifying," Penny said, "not only impressing the people in the crowd but for the judges. Members of the technical committee said they were impressed by every one of her vaults."



It is the third year in a row an American has won the world championship vault gold medal. Alicia Sacramone, who tore her Achilles' tendon while training in Japan on Oct. 6, won last year and Kayla Williams won two years ago.



Sacramone, who flew home to Massachusetts to have surgery, congratulated Maroney via Twitter.



"So proud you kept it in the country! thats my girl!" Sacramone tweeted.

2011 Gymnastics Worlds: Women's All-Around

Jordyn Wieber of DeWitt won the women’s all-around gold medal this morning at the world gymnastics championships in Tokyo.

Russian Viktoria Komova, who held the lead going into the final apparatus – the floor exercise – took the silver medal after making several costly mistakes in her routine.

Wieber scored 59.382 total points to Komova’s 59.349.

China’s Jinnan Yao won the bronze medal (58.598), just ahead of Wieber’s USA teammate Aly Raisman (57.558).


Wieber, who’s a high school junior at DeWitt High, is coached by John and Kathryn Geddert of Twistars USA in Dimondale. John Geddert is serving as the Americans’ world team coach.


“Two dreams came true today – her being a world champion, and me coaching one,” Geddert said by phone from Tokyo immediately after the event.

Alicia Sacramone says on Twitter that the surgery "went well." It was performed by Dr. Robert B. Anderson, a past president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and team doctor for the Carolina Panthers. A timetable for her recovery isn't known. U.S. men's team member John Orozco finished second in qualifying at the world gymnastics championships 14 months after blowing out his Achilles'.

The London Olympics begin in less than 10 months.

Nastia Liukin announces gymnastics comeback

2008 Olympic all-around Champion Nastia Liukin Tweeted today, "Let the journey officially begin." USA Gymnastics confirmed that the Tweet means Liukin is training again to make a run for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Liukin, who won five medals at the 2008 Olympic Games, says she will concentrate on the uneven bars and balance beam, but most likely will not compete in the all-around. She will begin two-a-day training sessions when she returns to Dallas from the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, where she has official responsibilities with the International Gymnastics Federation.

Alicia Sacramone injured, to miss gymnastics world championships

U.S. gymnast Alicia Sacramone, the defending world vault champion and a returning Olympic medalist, injured her Achilles tendon during a training session in Tokyo on Wednesday and won't be in the lineup when the U.S. begins competition Saturday at the world championships there.

The Americans are aiming for a top-eight finish in the team competition, which would assure them a spot in the 2012 Olympics.

Sacramone was the only returning Olympian sent to Tokyo who also was a member of the 2008 team that brought home the silver medal. Three other members of that team -- Shawn Johnson, Bridget Sloan and Chellsie Memmel -- are part of the U.S. squad that will compete in the Pan-American Games in Mexico later this month.

Competing for the U.S. in Tokyo will be, on vault, Sabrina Vega, Gabrielle Douglas, Alexandra Raisman, Jordyn Wieber and McKayla Maroney of Laguna Hills; on uneven bars: Raisman, Maroney, Vega, Wieber, Douglas; on balance beam, Maroney, Vega, Raisman, Wieber, Douglas; and on floor exercise, Douglas, Vega, Wieber, Maroney and Raisman.

Former UCLA gymnast Anna Li, an uneven bars specialist who was a surprise pick for the team because of her swinging skills, is also out of the competition because of an abdominal injury, leaving the U.S. thin on that apparatus. In the qualifying round, five gymnasts compete on each apparatus with the top four scores counting. In the finals only three gymnasts compete and all three scores count.
Johnson, the 2008 all-around silver medalist who also won team and floor exercise silver and balance beam gold, was designated as an alternate for the team competing in Japan. But because Sacramone's and Li's injuries occurred after the team had already arrived in Tokyo, it was too late for Johnson to travel to the competition. Johnson is less than a year into her comeback from retirement after the 2008 Olympics.

It will be an inexperienced team now that tries to earn the U.S. its Olympic spot. Maroney, just 15, Vega and Douglas, who trains with Johnson in Iowa, are all first-year senior-level gymnasts.
