U.S. sweeps team, all-around titles at City of Josolo Trophy

JESOLO, Italy, March 31, 2012 – The U.S. Women's Team, competing under the direction of National Team Coordinator Martha Karolyi, won the junior and senior team titles, swept the senior all-around and also won the junior all-around at the 2012 City of Jesolo (Italy) Trophy on March 31. Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif., Gym-Max, won the senior all-around crown, with Lexie Priessman of Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati Gymnastics, earning the junior all-around title. The USA also won 17 individual event medals for the juniors and seniors combined.

The U.S. Team easily won the senior team title, scoring a total of 236.950. Italy was second at 224.250 and Russia finished third at 217.800. The nine members of the senior U.S. Team are: Rebecca Bross, Plano, Texas, WOGA; Brianna Brown, West Chester, Ohio, Cincinnati Gymnastics; Brenna Dowell, Odessa, Mo., GAGE; Sarah Finnegan, St. Louis, Mo., GAGE; McKayla Maroney, Long Beach, Calif., All Olympia; Elizabeth Price, Coopersburg, Pa., Parkettes; Alexandra Raisman, Needham, Mass., Brestyan's American Gymnastics; Mykayla Skinner, Gilbert, Ariz., Desert Lights Gymnastics; and Ross.

Ross had the top senior all-around score with a 59.850. Completing the all-around sweep, Raisman finished second with a 59.050, Finnegan was third with 58.650 and Maroney was fourth with a 57.950.

2011 World Championships vault gold medalist Maroney had the top score for the vault with a 16.000, the highest score of the meet. Price was second on vault with a 15.70 and Ross was third with 15.550.

Ross won the uneven bars title with a score of 15.050, followed by Dowell in second with a 14.600 and Raisman in third with a 14.450. Dowell is from the U.S. but was competing in a mixed group.

Ross also won beam with a score of 15.500, followed by Italy's Carlotta Ferlito in second with a 15.200 and Russia's Anastasia Grishina with a 15.050.

Grishina won the floor exercise title with a score of 14.800, with Raisman finishing second with a 14.650 and Finnegan a close third with a score of 14.600.

In the junior division, the U.S. Team posted a 226.850 to Italy's 217.200 and Russia's 215.900. The five members of the junior squad are: Madison Desch, Lenexa, Kan., GAGE; Bailie Key, Coppell, Texas, Texas Dreams Gymnastics; Amelia Hundley, Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati Gymnastics; Katelyn Ohashi, Plano, Texas, WOGA; and Priessman.

Priessman won the all-around title with her score of 56.950, followed by Italy's Enus Mariani with a 56.000 and Key with a 55.650. The U.S. women earned three of the four event titles. Priessman won vault with a 15.850 and was also second on bars (14.700) and third on floor (14.200). Ohashi won both of the events she competed -- bars (15.150) and beam (15.100). Russia's Anastasia Grishina won the floor title with a score of 14.300.

Other U.S. medals earned include Key's second on vault (14.900) and second on floor (14.250). Hundley took third place on vault with a score of 14.650.

Manche Kleidungsstücke kommen nie aus der Mode. Man kann sie ewig im Kleiderschrank haben und das sollte man auch. Denn wer an Tag x plötzlich zu einem besonderen Event eingeladen wird, hat etwas Passendes zum Anziehen griffbereit.

Frau kann sie rund um das Jahr tragen, egal welche Farben und Schnitte die Modewelt gerade wieder einmal zum neuesten Schrei ausgerufen hat: sogenannte Klassiker, im Fachjargon auch Basics genannt. Diese Kleidungsstücke lassen sich mit allem kombinieren und kleiden zu jedem Anlass passend. Kurzum: Kommt der Tag, an dem man überraschend zu einem Fest oder einem Vorstellungsgespräch muss, diese Teile in der Grundausstattung des Kleiderschranks retten uns.

Als Coco Chanel 1926 das Kleine Schwarze entwarf, war es ein Skandal - heute sei es ein Muss im Kleiderschrank jeder Frau, sagt der Modeberater Andreas Rose aus Frankfurt. «Egal ob im Büro, beim Shoppen oder auf der Firmenfeier, mit ihm ist Frau immer gut angezogen.» Er empfiehlt aber, eine schlichte Variante zu kaufen, denn mit unterschiedlichen Accessoires und Make-up könne es variiert werden. Auch Sonja Grau, Personal Shopperin aus Ulm, rät von Pailletten oder Rüschen am Kleid ab. Achten sollte man hier auf die Wahl des Ausschnittes: «Ein runder Ausschnitt kann den Oberkörper schnell breit erscheinen lassen, ein V-Ausschnitt hingegen streckt die Statur der Trägerin.»

Ein weiteres Muss im Kleiderschrank ist nach Ansicht von Modeexperten ein dünner, gerade geschnittener Bleistiftrock. «Am besten knielang in schwarz oder dunkelblau - das steht jeder Frau und passt immer», sagt Kathrin Bierling, Modejournalistin und Bloggerin aus München. Rose hingegen rät zu farbigen Modellen und empfiehlt insbesondere Rot oder andere Beerenfarben. «Dazu trägt man am besten eine weisse Bluse oder ein Twinset.» Wenn es um die Bluse als Klassiker geht, sind sich alle Experten einig: Weiss muss sie sein. Wer in weiss zu blass wirkt, sollte auf Creme ausweichen, empfiehlt Bierling.

Bei der Beinbekleidung benötigt jede Frau laut Grau mindestens zwei Exemplare im Schrank: eine schwarze Stoffhose und eine Jeans. Sie rät bei der Jeans zu einer leichten, gleichmässigen Waschung und einem geraden Schnitt, dem sogenannten Straight Cut. Wichtig sei auch, dass die Proportionen der Gesässtaschen stimmig sind. «Po-Taschen sollten in der Spitze immer dort enden, wo der Po in den Oberschenkel übergeht.»

Unauffällig, aber unverzichtbar sind T-Shirts, Longsleeves und Pullover. Bierling empfiehlt besonders einen hellen, dünnen Kaschmirpullover. «Dieser Pullover ist ein Allrounder, den man Sommer wie Winter tragen kann.» Zur kalten Jahreszeit lässt sich unter den Pullover ein langärmliges T-Shirt ziehen, im Fachjargon Longsleeve genannt. Longsleeves und T-Shirts in den klassischen Farben sowie mit O- oder V-Ausschnitt lassen sich auch gut zu Rock oder Hose kombinieren, sagt Rose.

«Blazer sind nicht nur für Business-Leute schick», sagt Rose. Entsprechend kombiniert könne der Blazer auch sehr lässig wirken. Der Modeberater schlägt vor, die Ärmel hochzukrempeln oder mit einer Chino zu kombinieren. «Wer sich eine Taille zaubern will, kann auch eine Variante mit Schulterpolstern wählen.» Roses Lieblingsvariante für jüngere Frauen sind die extra langen Blazer im Boyfriend-Stil. Grau mahnt hier aber zur Vorsicht: Kleine Frauen sollten kurze Blazer wählen, nur grössere Frauen könnten längere Varianten tragen.

Ein wichtiges Teil ist auch der Cardigan, die kragenlose Strickweste. «Der Cardigan sollte entweder schmal oder überweit geschnitten sein. Alles dazwischen ist unvorteilhaft», erläutert Bierling. Für Grau ist beim Cardigan vor allem wichtig, dass er uni ist, kleinere Details wie andersfarbige Einfassungen, goldene Knöpfe oder Embleme seien aber kein Tabu.

Giulia Steingruber of Switzerland stole the show in the Women’s Vault final with a flawless display that fetched her a whopping 14.662 points for gold in the 5th FIG Artistic Gymnastic Challenge Cup


Giulia Steingruber of Switzerland stole the show in the Women’s Vault final with a flawless display that fetched her a whopping 14.662 points for gold in the 5th FIG Artistic Gymnastic Challenge Cup at the Aspire Dome yesterday. 
Finishing second was Nadine Jarosch of Germany with an effort of 13.837, while, Teja Belak of Slovakia bagged bronze with a total of 13.812 
“I’m extremely pleased with my showing. I had a good preparation before coming here and the competition is also tough with most of the top gymnasts here. I would like to build on this performance,” said an elated Steingruber after the medals ceremony. 
Silver medallist Jarosch was also banking on this success to make it to the German team for the Olympics. “This result is a huge confidence booster for me. The competition back home is tough and we will be having the Nationals soon and the team for the Olympics will be decided only after that. I’m hoping that I can keep up the good work till then,” said a beaming Jarosch. 
In the Men’s Pommel Horse event, the gold medal was bagged by Slovanian Saso Bertoncelj with 15.225 points. Bertoncelj, made a tactical decision of concentrating on a clean finish rather than trying something extravagant as he was the last to perform. 
“I decided to keep it simple; opted for an easy exercise as the finalists before me failed to finish well. There were lots of mistakes done by the others. The move worked well for me and that’s why I’m very happy,” said a jubilant Bertoncelj. 
The second place was bagged by China’s Qiuhua Liao with 14.825 while the third went to Frenchman Cyril Tommasone with 14.625. In the men’s floor, China’s Kai Zou got the better of Croatia’s Tomislav Markovic with a stunning acrobatic display which fetched him a total of 15.500. Markovic, for his attempt, managed 15.025 points and silver. Bronze went to Romania’s Vlad Bogdan Cotuna with 14.825 points. 
As expected, British ace, Elizabeth Tweddle lived up to her reputation  and won the women’s uneven bar event comprehensively with a total of 15.175.China’s Yuyuan Jiang had to be content with the second spot with a total of 14.875 while the bronze went to Germany’s Katharina Lisa Hill who accumulated 14.575 points.

Doha Challenger Cup

The Romanian women and Chinese men topped the half the events during the qualification at the 5th Doha Challenger Cup, held Wednesday in Qatar.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Catalina Ponor had the top mark on balance beam (switch ring; ro two-foot layout; Onodi, ff, back pike; front aerial, ff, layout; switch leap; Kochetkova; double pike). Teammate Diana Bulimar led the women's floor exercise standings, nailing her tumbling passes of double layout; 1 1/2 to double pike; piked full-in and double tuck. Larisa Iordache, Romania's top hope for the 2012 Olympic Games, fell twice on balance beam (tucked full twist and two-foot layout) but qualified to the uneven bars final.

Giulia Steingruber led the women's vault qualification, while British superstar Beth Tweddle stunned the field with her 15.800 mark (7.0 Difficulty score).

Croatia's Tomislav Markovic had the best score on men's floor exercise, Slovenia's Saso Bertoncelj led pommel horse and French ringsmaster Danny Rodrigues led his best event.

The Chinese men qualified first on the three remaining men's events: Du Wei on vault, Guo Weiyang on parallel bars and Zou Kai on high bar.

The competition, part of the FIG's Challenger Cup series, continues Thursday with the first day of finals.

Three National Team members participated in the Opal Cup international tournament in Calais, France March 24-25. Senior Jazzy Kerber finished third in the all-around behind France's Delphine Ledoux and Russia's Elizaveta Nazarenko and earned the bronze medal in all four event finals.
In the Junior division, Jennifer Rokhman had the second highest score in the all-around behind Russia's Anna Markelova but was entered "out of concourse" (one per country). Monica Rokhman finished sixth in the all-around and earned the silver medal in the ribbon final, tied with Germany's Anastasia Kempf.

Kellogg's® Tour of Gymnastics Champions announces 40-city national tour

INDIANAPOLIS, March 28, 2012 – 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin and members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team will kick off the Kellogg's® Tour of Gymnastics Champions on Sept. 9 in Ontario, Calif. The 40-city tour runs through Nov. 18 and will make stops in cities big and small across the United States, including Las Vegas, Dallas, Kansas City, Mo., Minneapolis, Louisville, Ky., Hartford, Conn., and Brooklyn, N.Y., to name a few. "The Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions will be unlike any previously produced," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "We plan to celebrate the many wonderful things gymnastics means to young people, along with showcasing some of the biggest names in the sport. Our fans will truly enjoy connecting with the U.S. Olympic team following their accomplishments in London."
"USA Gymnastics has produced countless memorable moments throughout the history of the Olympic Games," said Kellogg U.S. Morning Foods President David Denholm. "Kellogg's is excited to help bring the incredible athletes who create these moments to fans, even after the Games have ended, as part of our official partnership."

NORMAN, Okla. - In front of their home crowd, the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners captured their fifth overall Big 12 Gymnastics Championship with a season-high score of 197.475 Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla.

New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team won its fourth consecutive ECAC Division II title on Saturday afternoon as the Purple Knights posted a team score of 195.475 to best second place Southern Connecticut State (191.175 points) and third place West Chester University (188.775 points).
