Zetlin began the day with ribbon. She earned a 24.250 for her routine that included a number of jumps and ribbon tosses. For clubs, she posted a 24.225, which brought her four event total to 96.675. She had a minor miss during her clubs routine but nailed her final toss. On the first day of the qualification round, Zetlin earned a 24.450 for ball, and a 23.750 for hoop.
"My goal was to make it here," said Zetlin, "not just for myself – it has been a dream of mine since I was little – but also to help the U.S. rhythmic program. It was a great feeling competing for my country – that was my biggest dream. Seeing all of those American flags in the audience lifted my heart every single time. Seeing them after my last routine, I got really emotional because I have had an 18-year career and being here is icing on the cake."
Russia's Evgeniya Kanaeva and Daria Dmitrieva are first and second, respectively, at the conclusion of the qualification round. Aliya Garayeva of Azerbaijan was third.
Rhythmic gymnastics wrapped up gymnastics at the Olympic Games. Earlier in the Games, the U.S. women, dubbed the Fierce Five, won the team gold, just the USA's women's second Olympic team title. Gabby Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Chow's Gymnastics, won the all-around gold medal, and Danell Leyva of Miami/Universal Gymnastics, claiming the bronze in the men's all-around. In the individual event finals, Aly Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan's America Gymnastics, won the USA's first ever women's floor exercise gold medal, as well as taking the bronze medal for the balance beam. McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympia Gymnastics, was the silver medalist on the vault. Savannah Vinsant of Lafayette, La./Trampoline and Tumbling Express, became the first U.S. trampoline athlete to qualify for the finals.
